삽살개 재단

[국문]

폴란드에 있는 제 지인이 프랑스 ‘브리어드(Briard)’를 키우고 있었는데 저는 긴 털을 가진 그 개를 무척 좋아해서 가끔 돌보거나, 함께 산책하면서 친하게 지냈습니다. 2015년 8월, 저는 서울에 있는주한 폴란드 대사관에서의 근무하기 위해 한국에 왔습니다.

한국에 부임 후, 브리어드와 비슷하게 생긴 신비롭고 독특한 매력을 지닌 삽살개를 알게 되었고 이 아름다운 한국에서 수백 년 동안 함께 해 온 토종견이자 천연기념물인 삽사리의 역사 대해 더 깊이 듣게 되었습니다. 브리어드 처럼 털이 덥수룩하고 훌륭한 삽살개를 보존하는 것이 무척 가치있는 일이라는 것을 알게 되어 입양하는 것에 대해 생각하기 시작했습니다.
 

삽살개와 함께 하는 것이 저의 꿈이었기에 한국삽살개재단에 입양신청서를 보냈고 좋은 소식이 들려오길 기다렸습니다. 드디어 크리스마스 이브 전날인 2016년 12월 23일, 생후 4개월쯤 된 마루를 만나 함께 집으로 왔습니다. 그 날, 저의 가장 큰 꿈 중 하나가실현되었습니다.

이전에도 그리고 앞으로도 겪어보지 못 할 마치 첫사랑 같았습니다. 마루를 마주한 첫 날, 저는 사랑에 빠졌습니다. 무척이나 활기차고 명랑하고 온 세상에 궁금한 것이 많은 아이였습니다. 가능한 한 이 친구와 많은 시간을 함께 보내기 위해 최선을 다했고, 평소에 남산공원을 데리고 다니며 산책을 했습니다. 공원에서 산책하는 동안엔 다른 개들뿐만 아니라 사람들과도 어울리는 것을 좋아해서 유명인사가 되었죠. 만나는 사람마다 마루를 예쁘고 멋진 삽살개라고 했습니다. 특히나 여성분들이! 저는 마루가 무척 자랑스러웠고, 마루 덕분에 한국인들과 교제하고, 그들과 만나 친근한 대화를 나눌 수 있는 좋은 기회들이 주어졌습니다. 한강을 따라 긴 산책을 즐길 때는 마치 진지한 철학자처럼 사색에 잠겨 강물을 바라보곤 했지요.

집에서는 줄곧 저를 주시하며 가는 곳마다 따라다녀 처음부터 우리 관계는 돈독해질 수 밖에 없었습니다. 시간은 흘러 2017년 12월 말에 저는 한국을 떠나 마루와 함께 폴란드로 돌아가야 했습니다. 한국에서 보낸 시간은 우리 인생에서 가장 아름다운 시기중 하나였습니다.

폴란드로 이사한 후, 마루는 새로운 환경에 매우 빠르게 적응해나갔습니다. 우리는 삼림으로 둘러싸여 조용한 바르샤바 교외에 살고 있습니다. 마루는 숲과 자연 공원과 같이 개방된 공간을 탐험하는 것을 즐기기에 평소 이 곳에서는 목줄을 묶을 필요가 없어 자유로움을 마음껏 누리는 것 같습니다! 하지만 처음 끈 없이 뛰기 시작했을 때, 마루가 잠시 제게서 멀어져 길을  잃었던 적이 있었습니다. 제가 목줄을 다시 매어 놓을 까봐 불러도 잘 오지 않더니 그 사이 일이 벌어져버린 거였죠. 하지만 그 날 이후로는 매우 신중하게 제가 자신의 곁에서 떠나있진 않은지 끊임없이 확인합니다.

마루는 저에게 아주 특별합니다. 그는 제 삶의 소중한 일부분이고, 제가 사랑하는 가족 중 하나 입니다. 저는 마루없는 삶을 상상할 수 없습니다.

I came to Korea in August 2015 to commence my employment at the Polish Embassy in Seoul. After a year in Korea I started thinking about adopting a shaggy dog from a shelter. Why a shaggy dog?

My friends in Poland had a long-haired dog French Shepherd (Briard) whom I liked very much and we were very close friends. I used to take care of him from time to time and loved to go on walks with him.

In the meantime I had learned about the existence of the Korean mystical and unique Sapsaree breed,  the national treasure of Korea.

When I learned more about the history of the Korean Sapsaree , I realized just how much of an icon these dogs are to this beautiful country, and have been for hundreds of years. They are a truly stunning breed and being part of their preservation is very important to me.

It was love at first sight. It never happened to me before and never after.

I really wanted to have a shaggy Sapsaree friend. It became my dream, but at the same time I have learnt that it would not be easy to make my dream come true. I placed an adoption application with the Sapsaree Foundation and hoped for a positive decision.

Finally on 23 December 2016, the day before Christmas Eve, one of my biggest dreams came true when I met my new friend Maru, who at the time was nearly 4 month old, and brought him home.
 

From the very first day I loved Maru very much. He was such an energetic, cheerful and happy puppy, very curious about the world.

I did my best to spend as much time with him as possible, take him for long walks, usually to Namsan Park in Seoul because I used to live in the nearby Hannam-dong area.

Maru loved to socialize with other dogs and people during the walks in the park. He was a real celebrity.  Nearly everybody recognized that he is a mystical and unique Sapsaree-gae. People admired him, especially ladies. I was a very proud of him. This gave me a good opportunity to socialize with Koreans, to meet up with them and have a friendly chats.

From the beginning Maru and I developed a very close relationship. At home Maru kept an eye on me all the time. When I was moving from one room to another Maru followed me all the time.

I also enjoyed our long walks along the bank of the Han river.  From time to time Maru would sit down and stare at the river like a real philosopher.

Time went by and at the end of December 2017 I had to leave Korea and move back to Poland together with my beloved best Korean friend Maru. The time we had spent in Korea was one of the most beautiful periods in our lives.

After moving to Poland Maru adapted very quickly to the new environment. We live in the suburbs of Warsaw, capital of Poland, which is a quiet area surrounded by woodland. From the beginning he enjoyed exploring open spaces,  especially forests and natural parks. Generally in these areas I don’t need to put him on a leash, so he can enjoy freedom and independence. I think Maru loves it very much.

He responds to my commands and the sound of my whistle rather quickly and comes to me if needed.  I find the whistle very useful and practical, especially when Maru is exploring forests and bushes and is out of my sight.

I have to mention that when Maru first started running without a leash in Poland I was experiencing problems.  From time to time Maru wouldn’t  respond to my command and wouldn’t come back to me as he was worried I’d put him back on a leash. One day everything changed rapidly after Maru got lost for a few hours but everything ended happily. Since this day Maru is very careful and attentive, and constantly checks if I follow him.

Maru is a very smart, gentle and sensitive dog. He’s very friendly to other dogs and people and doesn’t like aggression. He does, however try to dominate over other dogs when playing with them. He very much likes to chase birds, cats and other animals but he is never aggressive and he does not want to hurt them. He’s also a fantastic jumper especially when chasing squirrels.

Maru is very special to me. He’s a very important part of my life and a beloved member of my family. I cannot imagine life without Maru.
